High-Speed Chase Ends In Arrests Of Long Island Duo Who Had Infant In Car, Police Say

A traffic stop for speeding led to the arrests of two men who were traveling with an infant in their car when officers found a handgun and marijuana in their vehicle, police said

in Nassau County said that they pulled over the vehicle containing 18-year-old Ariel Serrano Ochoa, of Bay Shore, and 20-year-old Kaliem Tharpe of Massapequa on Dover Street in Massapequa on Sunday, Oct. 4 at 9:45 p.m. 

Officers reportedly saw the driver swerving, speeding and failing to use turn signals. 

Tharpe's 8-month-old daughter was in the rear passenger seat of the vehicle, said police, and a handgun was recovered under the driver's seat and a substance believed to the marijuana were found.

Both men were charged with the felonies of 

  • second-degree criminal possession of a weapon 
  • third-degree criminal possession of a weapon
  • fourth-degree criminal possession of stolen property 
  • second-degree unlawful possession of marijuana. 

Additionally, Serrano Ochoa was given tickets for speeding and failing to signal; Tharpe was charged with the misdemeanor of endangering the welfare of a child.

The child was released into the custody of her mother at the scene.
